Shopify payment integration: Razorpay, checkout platforms, and testing
Understand payment gateways versus checkout platforms, provider eligibility, and the order tests to complete before launching.
Separate the gateway from the checkout
A payment gateway processes supported payment methods. A checkout platform manages parts of the buying experience, such as addresses and order review. Razorpay, Shiprocket’s fastrr Checkout, GoKwik, and other services do not all perform identical roles.
Before choosing a provider, map the current cart, checkout, payment, and order-confirmation journey. Decide which problem you need to solve: payment availability, mobile usability, COD handling, or an integration failure.
Confirm eligibility first
Check the provider’s current platform support, business eligibility, currencies, settlement arrangements, and merchant onboarding requirements. Confirm fees directly with the provider. A feature available to one merchant or region may not be available to another.
On Shopify, the supported customization depends on the plan and extension type. Advanced UI extensions on the information, shipping, and payment steps require Shopify Plus. A custom theme does not automatically provide unrestricted control of checkout.
Configure with a rollback plan
Record the existing configuration before making changes. Use the provider’s official installation instructions and supported test tools. Keep secret credentials out of theme files, public repositories, and screenshots.
Check whether the integration affects discounts, shipping rates, taxes, analytics, and order statuses. Avoid changing several checkout products at the same time, because troubleshooting becomes harder when the cause is unclear.
Test more than a successful payment
Test the supported successful, failed, cancelled, and retry flows. Review the order in both the store admin and provider dashboard. Check confirmation emails and ensure a return from the payment screen does not create confusing duplicate orders.
On a phone, review the keyboard, address form, error messages, back navigation, and payment handoff. For COD, test availability rules and how the resulting order is labeled. Complete any final live verification according to the provider’s guidance before directing customers to the new flow.
