Custom Shopify theme or another app? How to choose

Decide when a Liquid section is enough and when your store needs a maintained app or external service.

Describe the requirement before choosing a tool

Write down the customer action and the merchant workflow. A homepage layout, product information block, or collection banner may be a theme task. Recurring billing, external inventory synchronization, and server-side business logic need a different assessment.

Identify which templates need the feature, who edits it, and what should happen if the service fails. This prevents a simple visual requirement from becoming a larger integration than the business needs.

Use theme sections for presentation

Reusable Liquid sections and blocks can give merchants control over content without duplicating markup across templates. Define sensible settings and test long headings, missing images, and multiple product types.

Keep accessibility and mobile behavior part of the implementation. A custom section should support keyboard operation where interactive, preserve readable contrast, and avoid layout changes that move controls unexpectedly.

Use apps for the right operational needs

A maintained app can be the practical choice when it provides a service your theme cannot safely operate. Review support, compatibility, data access, pricing, and the removal process as well as the feature list.

Avoid claiming every app can be replaced with Liquid. Payment processing, subscription operations, and third-party systems often require provider services and supported APIs. Choose the smallest reliable solution for the requirement.

Compare total ownership, not only the monthly fee

Custom development brings maintenance responsibilities. An app brings recurring costs and dependencies. Compare installation effort, support, performance, upgrade work, and merchant usability before deciding.

Test the chosen approach on a duplicate theme or supported staging workflow. Document settings and rollback steps. After launch, review whether the feature solves the original problem and whether the merchant can maintain it without constant developer help.
